"Burn This"
This was one of the first attempts at book art or altered books I started
for myself, not meant as a gift. In keeping with its alternative themes
and styles, it remains incomplete, like the relationship it was meant to
represent. The title refers to standard instructions in covert messages
to memorize the contents, then burn the paper they are written on. I
also am horrified by censorship, shown in its most aggressive form as
book burning.
There are too many personal references to describe each page
element's relation to the theme, but in general, it describes a
relationship largely built on internet communication, the heat of
passion, and the struggle with ethical problems presented by the
relationship. It is not a happy book, but it is not without humor.
probably why it remains incomplete. Sometimes I can recapture the emotion at the time this was created and
complete another page, but I do not feel pressed to do so. I go back and record my current feelings, like a
journal. It is unique in its passage along time. I use a number of found objects in its assemblage.
Since much of the meaning is in the details, the photographs do not always capture the essence of each page's
message. I will try to describe them as best I can. It was not meant to be a beautiful or even attractive book,
simply a raw expression of my feelings at that time.
