"Friendship is Forever"
I first met my dearest girlfriend in law school, and we have
remained close ever since, for more years than I care to
admit. Her birthday was approaching - one of those scary
ones with a zero after it. This occasion called for a very
special gift for my friend. This altered book, by far the most
extensive book I've made, was the result.
It is full of "in-jokes", personal references, and all the history
we share. She loves Dylan Thomas, so many pages have
snippets of his poetry. I worked in a palette of her favorite
colors. Some of the unifying elements are frequent
quotations from classical and Islamic art, many maps, with a
touch of blue and a bit of tape measure in some form on
every page.
The work is very flat; very few dimensional accents were
used. I intended it to be able to serve as a scrapbook album
if she wanted to add photos, so I had to keep the pages
smooth enough for photographs to adhere securely. As it
turned out, she didn't want to change a thing, and it remains
as you see here.
