The background of the Gee's Bend quilts is the ultimate art Cinderella story. When I first saw
photographs of them I was blown away by their vibrancy and composition. The New York Times
called them "some of the most miraculous works of modern art America has produced." When
learned the story behind the quilt artists, I was deeply moved. As I researched the history of Gee's
Bend and the making of the quilts, I realized that it was a story of mothers and daughters, of the
wisdom and vision passed down and shared over many generations. I made this altered book as a
custom Mother's Day gift, featuring the quilts and the quilters, in their own words, talking about their
mothers' influence on their artwork and lives.
The book itself is quilt-like, constructed in a blocky format with humble materials, fabric backgrounds,
stitched paper, many fibers, ribbons, twill tape and small fabric scraps extending from the margins.
Images of the quilts were transferred to singed, manipulated transparencies on every other page,
and a collage of tiny quilts on the end papers. I included a tag book on the inside back cover with
the story of the quilts and a poem. I constructed a wood presentation box with denim details (denim
work clothes were used in many of the original quilts).
